Minecraft; a quick look

I’ve been playing a lot of Minecraft lately. Minecraft is a new indie game in early public alpha phase. The gameplay differs from gamemode to gamemode but they all involve adding and removing lego-like blocks for construction of structures, and the game environment itself. If the idea of a game with multiple game modes spanning from basic sandbox creative play building to actual game play with enemies and mining resources sounds awesome, you need to check this out. This game is currently in extremely early development, so please don’t judge the game forever off it’s current form. However, I feel it’s pretty awesome as is.

First there is creative mode, basically you just go wild with sandbox game play, just build all sorts of cool structures and stuff. It’s pretty endless the ideas. Here is a small selection of a few amazing things friends have made. I didn’t make any of these, anything I make usually sucks. Psst, creative mode can be played as multi player on a server!

Alright, now that you’ve seen creative mode, what else is there? Minecraft currently offers a mode called Infdev which is currently the mode under development with new additions weekly. It’s more of actual game play with the basics of it being mine up ore, chop wood, etc, to craft tools to build blocks to create fortresses and such to protect yourself from enemies and for your own enjoyment.

It’s main core feature is the ability of the game to create computer generated near infinite maps for you to play on. Roughly the map size in this mode is 8 times the surface of earth. Basically this means you can explore the world forever to find new caves, islands, resources and more. I’ve yet to actually play this game mode myself, as you must pre-purchase the game to access it.

Minecraft‘s creative and survival modes are currently available freely to play. To support this indie developer and furthermore help keep continued development of Minecraft, you can currently pre-purchase it at this moment and be able to play modes (that are currently being developed) currently closed off to free users such as Infdev. Read the full details of the pre-purchase here. I suggest all to try Minecraft, even if just the creative game mode.

Sunday Showcase: Fiverr, the things people do for $5

Fiverr

Fiverr Frontpage

The front page of Fiverr

Fiverr, launched in March 2010, is a somewhat popular online market for buyers to purchase tasks (called “Gigs” by the site) to be completed by registered sellers. As the name suggests, all gigs have a flat fee of $5. Essentially, people can register and post gigs that they will complete for a flat fee of $5. There is a wide selection of gigs to choose from if you’re looking to buy.

Sellers can possibly make some decent money off the site at the moment due to it’s popularity hasn’t completely spiked yet and it isn’t completely flooded. Come up with an unique task that hasn’t been offered much on the site already, and you’ve got it in the bag. When creating a gig though, keep in mind you only actually receive $4 of it as Fiverr will take a $1 commission fee on every sale.

From the buyer point of view, there are a few faults. Probably the biggest fault is you have absolutely no quality insurance. For example, if you order a website banner creation gig for $5, and then get back an MS Paint horrific red background with a line of text that anyone could do in 10 seconds. There’s nothing for you as a buyer to do besides add a negative review, other then that, you’re SOL. The seller can then just go make another account and repeat, and your negative review was useless.

Reviews like these are all too common

Besides the fact there is no insurance of quality for buyers and Fiverr wants to snap out $1 out of every gig, Fiverr is definitely a nice website for both buyers needing a task completed for cheap or sellers looking to make some cash off some gig they can offer. Check it out.

Hello from Fear (Introduction)

Hello there reader, and welcome to this brand new blog inspired by the release of WordPress 3. I’m digging the default theme and I’ll be rolling with it for some time. Have a suggestion for a new theme? Send me an email at justins@gojustin.net

The intent on this blog is 4 things:

  1. Showcase interesting websites, games, and other tools that I discover
  2. A place for me to post various reviews of iPhone apps, PC games, and more
  3. A place for me to blog about my incredibly boring life
  4. A place for me to document and blog my vacations

If any of those (do not fear number 3 and 4, most of this website will be 1 and 2) interest you, stick around by bookmarking this site or subscribing to my RSS feed.

Check tomorrow for the first real blog post, a Sunday Showcase post, a regular post every Sunday focused on showcasing a game, website, application or similar that isn’t all that popular and known yet and is interesting. If you know of something that you think would be a good fit to be featured on Sunday Showcase, send me a tip at justins@gojustin.net
